Picture perfect -- from afar
Robben Island makes the perfect postcard from high up, especially with beautiful Cape Town as a backdrop, as shown above. But its long history is one of oppression, captivity, and cruelty. Slaves, lepers, people with mental illness, banished African and Muslim leaders -- all were warehoused on the island. Beginning in the 1960s, the island became a prison of choice for the apartheid government as it tightened the noose on all opposition. Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and other freedom fighters were sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island in 1964.
