More than a cave
Like the bathroom that doubled as a classroom, this cave became more than just a shelter from the hot sun. Whenever possible, a few prisoners at a time would drift from their work and assemble here for lessons and discussion. Almost always, they did so at great risk. But sometimes, a warder would look the other way and let the classes proceed. The prison leadership had a way of dealing with empathetic guards: All warders served a maximum of two years at Robben Island, after which they were shipped off to other prisons. This constant flow of new and unpredictable warders kept the prisoners on edge at all times.
