Whenever possible, a few prisoners at a time would drift from their work and assemble here for lessons and discussion. Almost always, they did so at great risk. But sometimes, a warder would look the other way and let the classes proceed. The prison leadership had a way of dealing with empathetic guards: All warders served a maximum of two years at Robben Island, after which they were shipped off to other prisons.
