  Nelson Mandela's cell

Both became stronger
Bars kept people apart for much of the time, but Mandela and others seized every opportunity to interact and socialize with other prisoners. "I do not know how I could have done it had I been alone," he writes. "We supported each other and gained strength from each other. Men react differently to stress. But the stronger ones raised up the weaker ones, and both became stronger in the process." Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island for more than 18 years -- much of that time in the cell shown above. He was transferred to a prison on the mainland in 1982.
