  Meeting

All of us
Thulani bears many scars and lingering injuries from the brutal treatment at Robben Island. He participated in the Truth and Reconciliation process led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, where he encountered some of his former captors. "They said that they were just following orders," Thulani says flatly. He has run into his former wardens and warders. One time, he saw a group of them having drinks in the newly refurbished dock area in Cape Town where prisoners used to board the boat for Robben Island. Some of the former guards now work with Thulani on Robben Island. He has even had a warder to his house for dinner. As much as possible, Thulani's eyes are on the present and future. "South Africa belongs to all of us, regardless of our color," he says. It was an honor to meet him.
