  Thabo

The future
The future is now being handed to new generations -- to people like Thabo. I met him at a clothing store in Cape Town, and we were soon engaged in conversation about Nelson Mandela, current South Africa president Thabo Mbeki, and the years ahead. "You know what?" he asked. "Just 16 years ago, I could have gotten arrested for talking to you because you're white." The future is bright, Thabo said. Yes, there are serious problems -- crime, unemployment, HIV/AIDS. But by following Mandela's lead, all things are possible. Mandela himself visited the shop one day, and Thabo was there to meet his hero. The experience brought tears to his eyes. For many years to come, Mandela's legacy will live on in people like Thabo.
