Daily life
Guard towers were manned in key areas around the maximum security complex. Treatment was brutal. Prisoners were forced to march in precise lockstep or face beatings. Even after long days of hard labor in a quarry, they were expected to maintain an even cadence. Suitable jackets were handed out only on the eve of visits by Red Cross representatives. Medical care was nonexistent -- except for an occasional distribution of pain pills to a few of the many people who needed serious treatment.
