Days and nights of despair
For years, the prisoners slept on this concrete floor with a single thin mat
like the ones shown above. They eventually received a second mat, but the harsh conditions
were destroying people's health. Letters from home were sporadic at best -- and many
were chopped up by zealous censors in the warden's office. Families at home were
harrassed and worse. Thulani's father was gunned down the day he was to visit his
son at Robben Island. His father survived but has been in a wheelchair ever since.
Thulani emotionally recalls how his fellow prisoners comforted him as the nightmare
unfolded.
