Learning to hope
Here is the classroom. That's right, the prisoners secretly held classes in the
bathroom. One of them would stay outside, listening for the gate sounds that would
signal an approaching warder -- while the rest of them gathered to learn and talk
about history, politics, sociology, and many other subjects. Few of the prisoners
were formal teachers, but all had knowledge to share. And the classes weren't just
for learning; they were also about hope. As Nelson Mandela repeatedly said: "Improve
your education and be prepared to govern." Many former prisoners now serve in
high-level government posts.
