Endless roads

A lesson in perspective
The next time you're stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, take a deep breath and enjoy that wonderful pavement beneath your wheels. Mongolia has plenty of roads -- befitting a country whose land mass is equal to Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal combined. But only 1,000 miles of them are paved. The rest are made of stomach-challenging dirt, rocks, dips, and ruts. The picture above is typical. That's our SUV making its bumpy way to a distant town. Our driver believed in the "high velocity theory of bump avoidance," which says that the faster you go, the smoother your ride. I questioned this theory countless times during our six-hour round trip. And with each new bump, I came to appreciate those smooth roads back home.
